ZINES ZINES ZINES. Maggie Lee is a lovely Brooklyn-based artist who creates

and collects zines. Her work was recently featured at the Vice Photo Exhibition and

her 'Frenching' issues are filled with personal stories, photos and collections

of her favorite things. What's better than the art of self-publishing? Uh, nothing.

MAGGIE LEE for BAISER MAGAZINE (Feature #18)

Where do you live and what inspires you?

I live in Brooklyn, NY and moved here for school in 2005.

New York fall weather, New York wind really makes me want to make anything/ everything. The summer is lazy and the air is heavy, and I find it difficult making any worthy work. The city in general really inspires me. It sounds cliche, I know, but there are new things happening constantly. Slow pace laziness really dulls me down, like being home in New Jersey.

How old were you when you made your first zine?
I was in the 8th grade. My first zine was called Smash Maggiezine and the first issue was called "no parents". I wish I had it, but I probably burned it when I realized it sucked.

Are you currently working on any new ones?
I'm working on creating a new body of work, i'm not really sure where its going but I'm trying to go in a conceptual direction. The next zine I want to make will have color photos and black and white photocopy manipulation.

How did Zine Creamers start?
My friends were all making really great zines and I wanted to talk about them and for everyone to see. It's really exciting, people from other countries send me zines i love reading them, i keep them all. I havent done a zine creamers in a while, i'm going to do that right now actually.

Do you think that zines have a special sense about them because they usually come in limited quantities?
Zines are meant to be made in small editions, passed around, shared, displayed, and only for those who would really cherish it. Magazines are what's mass produced and for everyone to see and read. Theres just really something special about the process of an artist or personal zine, its a work of art in a way, but i guess it really depends how its rendered, there are a lot of bad zines. But there are also great zines that come in large editions, i like those too but you dont see a lot of them. Its also difficult to make a lot of zines since the costs of production most of the time outweighs the actual worth. also, most of the time they are given away to friends.

Where is your favorite place in New York?
Its so hard to decide, either on my bedroom floor working on projects,
pho at Thai Son on Baxer and Walker in china town, or wandering the MoMA, PS1, or New Museum.

Three things you can't live without are...
1. good people
2. mac computer
3. delicious treats

Any advice to young artists?
Always keep yourself aware of whats up and around. Keep on making work even if its terrible.

JANE & JEREMY INTERVIEW for BAISER MAGAZINE (Feature #17)

How did Jane & Jeremy start?

In a small room, in a small blue house in South London, after another long day
at work, it was probably raining outside and it was then we decided we wanted
to do something nice, for ourselves and our friends! We were always working
on our own projects before we met and we just felt like it could all work together well
as we both liked each others work. We did it for our own sanity! Why not?

Where are you from and what is the relationship between you two?
Jeremy is from Australia and Jane is from England....we met on a dance floor in
London...I guess that was where the Jane and Jeremy adventure began! We are
still in London and we are together.

What inspires you?
That can come from anywhere, you just never know. We like our traveling, photographic
books, Ed Ruscha's in particular, Gerhard Richter, Richard Prince, August Sander,
friends, conversations, music, finding nice things at markets and charity shops,
like booklets, old photographs, or ephemera.
One of Janes favourites at the moment is Fine little day blog and Jeremy still
thinks the talk by Damon Murray of FUEL Design goes down
as one of his most inspiring.

The Envelopes Book is brilliance. How did the idea start? How long did it take for you to collect all these envelopes?
Jane was doing work experience at 'THE FACE' Magazine many moons ago.....
"I got to do some good jobs, one of them was opening the post!! I liked all the
different envelopes they used to get from big fashion houses and creative people...
nice paper and designs, and handwriting. Instead of putting them in the bin I
put them in my bag and then decided to make a little sketch book from them.
Years later Jeremy found it and thought it was great, so we decided to make more
for our website....he's the entrepreneur!"
Now we ask all our friends to save their envelopes for us!

Are you currently working on any new projects?
Yes, just about to release Palm Springs, a new book whch is by our friend
photographer Noel Mclaughlin. We're also working on two new books, with our
own imagery....one will be images of surfing inspired by the surfing film Litmus
and the other will be another photographic series.

Any advice to young artists?
Just work hard and get your work out for people to see it....working with friends
is great for that! And always have fun!

I met and interviewed NO AGE at Daikanyama Unit in Tokyo before their show awhile ago..

Randy Randall and Dean Spunt make up NO AGE. Interviewing people from L.A. was so refreshing since I grew up in Huntington Beach. They were also really nice and hilarious. Talked about California, smoking weed, tofu and 90's jams.

Hey guys, are you liking Tokyo so far?

Dean: I like the food.

Anything specific?

Randy: FRESHNESS BURGER

(Freshness Burger is a fast food restaurant in Japan)

D: So good, they have a tofu burger. We're both vegan so eatings a little difficult but yeah Freshness Burger is awesome, we went there today.

What do you think about the Japanese audience? Most bands think that the crowd here is usually quiet, like when you pause inbetween songs..

R: But we don't really pause inbetween songs much..

D: It's a little more quiet than most American audiences

R: I don't know, last night they were grabbing my guitar. They were cool.

D: I think if anything its just the cultural difference, like maybe they're more polite with the shouting?

What's your favorite song to play live?

D: Hmmm, that's a good question...

R: Well we have two new songs on the set so it's more fun. The rest we've played quite a bit.

We have a new one called Fever Dreaming, it's fun.

D: I like playing 'Teen Creeps'.

I think thats my favorite. I also like your instrumental You is My Hot Rabbit, what is that about anyway?

R: That's the myspace jam! I got the name from a translation into french. My girlfriend at the time wrote me a letter all in french and I had to go to google translator, cut and paste it because I didn't know how to read it.

That's super romantic..

D: Awww

R: At the end of the letter it said You is my Hot Rabbit, I don't know what that meant... I'm not sure what she actually meant to say in french but I thought that was the best phrase ever, so I named the song after that. We actually only played that live once.

Are you gonna play it tonight?

R: Umm, naw

You should!

D: We haven't practiced it.

R: That would be a fun one to play though

You should dedicate it!

D: Haha yeah to the kids, man!

What's your favorite song in general than?

R: Ahh man probably "Wild Combination" by Arthur Russell. He's amazing. Electronic cellist from New York in the 70s. It's very hauntingly beautiful.

D: Ace of Base.

D+R: Allllll that she wants is another baby, she's gone tomorrow..

I know you guys support all age bands and gigs. Did you ever have any fake IDs when you couldn't get into venues?

R: I had a fake one. I worked at a movie theater in Hollywood and somebody had dropped their ID. It belonged to some 35 year old guy from Florida. So, I was 19 with this guy's ID..

D: It's hard memorizing the birthday

R: Yeah, they sometimes ask 'Are you a Scorpio or a Capricorn?'

D: Or your height!

How were you guys like when you were teenagers? Dorky... gangster..

D: Hmm, GANGSTA. No, I was kinda cool? I was a music dork and skateboarded alot. But when I was like 12, I was a little bit of a gangster..

Haha me too! Like listening to Biggie, Eminem, A Tribe Called Quest...

D: YEAH!

And than I got into the Smiths, Joy Division..

D: Aw man, thats a big thing when you hear The Smiths for the first time.

R: 16, clumsy and shy..

OUT HERE OVER THERE interview for BAISER MAGAZINE (Feature #15)

BAISER MAGAZINE:Okay, first off how did Out Here Over There start? How did all three of you meet and who came up with the idea of starting a blog?

ALEX: we've all known each other for a long time, before any of us picked up a camera. we come from one of those small towns where everyone knows everyone.. we used to go shoot photos, drop them off at the photo lab and then look through each others prints. then i moved away, and obviously we couldn't do that anymore. so we made this blog to share our photos with each other.

SIMON: It started when Alex came back from University and we were all together and we had a conversation about how we were all tired of Flickr then Alex came up with the idea of sharing a blog together, a couple of days later we got a name and the rest is history.

SOPHIE: We decided to make the blog so we could share the photos that we liked with each other, rather than ones we thought were “good”. The name is fitting because me and Si are “out here” and Alex is “over there”!

BM: What camera(s) do you use? Do you prefer film or digital?

A: whatever fits in my pocket and i don't have to worry about breaking. film always.

SI: Go between SLR and point n’ shoot, film all the way.

SO: I always use 35mm point and shoots - I’ve never had the patience for SLRs, I wish I did. Never digital.

BM: What makes a photograph special to you? Do you look for any meaning or story when shooting?

A: i can't really tell you what makes a photograph special to me, because i like different photos for different reasons.. and as for looking for a meaning or story when shooting, i don't consciously go out and look for it. i think most of my photos have a meaning / story, but its usually not apparent until later on.

SO: I try to keep things spontaneous, so I never really try to put meaning into things - its nice that people can interpret photography in their own way.

BM: Do you carry a camera wherever you go? Where is your favourite place to shoot?

A: yeah i always have a camera with me.my favourite place to shoot is somewhere that i haven't been before.

SI: Yes I do, and any natural environment, the woods especially.

SO: A camera is the only thing that I take everywhere with me. My favourite places to take photos are really intimate places like bedrooms or natural lonely places like forests.

BM: What is in the future for Out Here Over There or for each of you individually?

A: i don't know, we'll see.

SI: Who knows, see what happens.

SO: Its not something we’re trying to push in a direction, however it progresses is fine.

BM: What do you like to do besides taking photos?

A: chill

SI: Words.

SO: Anything new.

BM: Do you have any favourite artists/photographers at the moment?

A: don van vliet, billy childish, william christenberry, richard billingham, albert fish..

SI: Andreas Banderas & Melanie Bonajo

MARCELINA AMELIA interview for BAISER MAGAZINE (Feature #14)

BAISER MAGAZINE: Tell us about yourself, how old are you and where are you from?

MARCELINA AMELIA: I’m 20 years old. I was born in Czestochowa which isn't a very big city, it is in the south part of Poland. I studied in a local Art school for six years and I graduated it as graphic designer. About year ago I came to London to study. I just finished my first year at University of Westminister with an Illustration course.

BM: What inspires you the most when creating your artwork?

MA: Faces, emotions and bodies. Thoughts and dreams. Sensuality and sadness. To my way of thinking, an artist never has a break from his work. Every day is an inspiration, creative ones have their eyes always open. I look very carefully at the people around me.

BM: Are there any special techniques you use?

MA: I like to mix a lot of techniques at the same time. I like to draw with black pen, and do a lot of expressive colorful watercolor splashes. And I use black ink and water a lot. I not afraid of experimentation, even digital editing.

BM: Most of your drawings are of girls, are these your friends/models or do you make them up?

MA: A lot of my girls are based on me, I can look very different if I want to, every day is a different feeling for me. I like doing self-emotion portraits. I draw girls who sometimes look more or less like me but her emphasis is on the same emotions that I have. But I draw my friends too, sometimes just strangers, some interesting faces that I see on the street. I love to look for beauty in a very wide context, I have collected millions of pictures of faces that inspire me.

BM: What is your philosophy?

MA: "Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen." - Robert Bresson

BM: Three things you can't live without are...

MA: Something to draw with, Love, and eyeliner

BM: What is in the future for Marcelina Amelia?

BM: What do you do when you're not drawing/painting?

BAISER MAGAZINE: What do you do and what inspires you?
MARLOWE GLITTERATI: Everything, but mostly, if I can quote one of my mentors, “I sell air”. I get inspired by going into a bookstore and smelling the “new book smell”, chain smoking (on occasion), drinking hella caffeine, walking around new cities by myself,

BM: What made you want to start The Only Glitterati and Petite--Anarchy?
MG: Two years ago I was really annoyed with girls who were only exploiting their looks on the internet or made themselves seem a lot more interesting than they are, there's nothing worse than meeting a girl from the internet who's a fucking bore. And I know it happens so much still, just a bunch of online bullshit. So I started the only glitterati to make a start or something along those lines. You know? I wanted to show that as a girl it’s easier to get noticed, but when people are paying attention have something to say. It was more of a documentation of two years in my life, which were fun, but my taste has changed and I've moved on, matured, almost.

Petite--Anarchy is a work in progress, I’m trying to showcase a bunch of people who I think are really talented. A lot of these kids are under 25, it’s important to realize the up and coming kids. I respect a lot of the older artists, but a lot of their work spawns from their youth like ten years ago. So it’s cool to see what’s up from kids right now. I’m really opinionated about that sort of thing.

BM: Where are you from and where is your favourite place?
MG: I’m born in Toronto, my parents are both from very warm places, the reason why I get really tanned. My favourite place at the moment would be San Francisco, Ocean Beach in particular, nothing could be more beautiful than the ocean.

BM: What kind of films, music and fashion are you interested in?

MG: I love foreign films, French cinema mostly, I like how in the end romance always ends up tragically. Music is so objective for me, Richard Hell, The Strokes, Lou Reed, Nico, and all that. There are so many bands that have maybe only a four song EP that I’m obsessed with. Fashion, I don’t really know, I’m into it but I mean it takes up so much time and money to keep up. I like pretty things.

BM: What is your day job?

MG: Intern extraordinaire

BM: What are your plans for the future?

MG: Running away, staying in love, finishing up a manuscript.

BM: Three words to describe yourself are..

MG: Volatile, Femme, Fatale

BM: What colour is your lipstick?

MG: At the moment, "Crushed Rose Bordeaux", I love the names they come up with.

This picture represents many things. Its up to you what it is though. It was for my AS level art by which I made one of my models sit painfully for about two hours until all the skin was covered in black mess. If you haven't got anything better to do, do what we did, colour your faces and go to town. Its something original which the city lacks so much and its so totally gothic, a look that's so fresh right now.

BAISER MAGAZINE: Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from?
MICKAEL: I'm mickael alias l'homme aux yeux rouges, a dream and fantasm creator. I live in Paris, or rather in its messy and boring suburb. I try to catch some moments of 'life' and to live in the big mess that my parisian life is.

BM: How did you get started in art? When was the first moment you knew you wanted to become an artist?
M: I think it happens naturally, since I was a kid, i could draw. I would isolate myself, i gave life to the characters and i would speak to them. I think that i see these characters like a singular language, they are my words, my cry with a lot of emergency in time. I try to introduce poesy, you know, i would like to grow old gently, be more quiet to my mind, being an artist is something we have inside ourselves, we can't learn to become one.

BM: What are your inspirations?
M: first, it is the time that i spend. I'm fascinated by cursed, isolated characters who are damaged by the society..anti-heroes and ink that trickles.

BM: We like the whole doodle effect you give your art, how long does it take to do one piece?
M: ouch! hard to answer precisely, to do one piece it can take a couple of minutes or a couple of months, or even all my life. In general, my hands get dirty, ink is trickling everywhere, i stain everything at home, it's a mess, but i like it.

BM: What are your plans for the future?

M: I'm working on my comix entitled 'EMPIRE!(the undergrrround comix)' and the first issue is coming very soon..it's about a boy who is lost between his mother who is as alived as a bag of ciment, he has a father fantazising about his old days and a powder face character coming to trample on his dreams...all orchestrate by the ring of an alarm clock. I'm making my own structure for the moment it's only DIY. It'll be published in september/october in some bookstores in France and in the U.S. I'm also working on my second exhibition about the theme 'LES 13 FANTASMES', it'll probably take place in Paris. BM: What is your favourite thing about living in Paris?
M: The living side of this city, the euphoria, this sweet melancholy from the world of the night, walking and getting lost..the huge side.

BM: Do you have any favourite bars, art galleries , etc in the city?
M: from time to time, i discover some temporary exhibitions at the pompidou center. I don't have a favourite bar cos i'm uncomfortable in public places..when there's too many people. I like parties but with few people. Otherwise i could quote some good concert halls such as 'La Maroquinerie' or 'Le point FMR'...I walk around the streets more than in the bars..and about the galleries from what i've seen until now, it's quite pretentious.

BM: What is your favourite saying in French?
M: "Ma journée à l'usine est finie!''

BM: Do you kiss and tell?
M: Yes and you know what? i kiss my grilfriend, it's crazy! French kisses!

JOSHUA BARTKY interview for BAISER MAGAZINE (Feature #10)

BAISER MAGAZINE: How old are you and where are you from?
JOSHUA BARTKY: I am 22 years old and currently reside in New York City, but grew up in New Jersey via Mexico/ Miami.

BM: What inspires you the most when taking photographs?
JB: I am very inspired by other-worldly creatures and beings because of their mystique and ability to captivate people's imaginations. I enjoy the idea that perhaps these beings exist yet we are blind to them for the most part (ie. vampires, ghosts, demons).

BM: What camera(s) do you use?

JB: I use a Yashica T4 and a Contax G2.

BM: Do you prefer film or digital?

JB: I prefer film for sure because it gives you a certain feeling that I feel you can not achieve as well with digital. Also film doesn't have that awful delete button that digital does!

BM: Do you have any favourite photographers at the moment?
JB: My favourite photographer at the moment is a tie between Ari Marcopolous and Matt Irwin.

BM: What is your favourite thing to shoot?

JB: My favourite things to shoot are people, mostly my friends and my little sister. I think the environment that the person is placed in is quite important as well. My dream is to take photos in a haunted mansion or Dracula's castle.

BM: What makes the perfect model for shooting?
JB: I think the perfect model is one that is down for anything like running around in circles in the rain and just being able to have fun with whatever I ask of them. I usually find it easier when it is a good friend because they usually will be down for whatever to make a great photo.

BM: What emotion do you usually try to capture?
JB: I don't know if I try to capture a particular emotion necessarily, but rather moments in time.

BM: What's next for you?

JB: I just graduated college and am hoping to travel, continue my zine SIDE EFFECTS, and hopefully learn how to communicate with spirits and Mariah Carey.

BM: Tell us more about your zine SIDE EFFECTS..
JB: SIDE EFFECTS is a zine I developed that focuses on other-worldly beings and creatures. I am currently wrapping up my second issue, which focuses on ghosts, while my first focused on vampires.

BM: What is your philosophy?

SARAH LARNACH interview for BAISER MAGAZINE (Feature #9)

BAISER MAGAZINE: Hi, tell us abit about yourself. How old are you and where are you from?

SARAH LARNACH: I am Sarah Larnach, I'm a visual artist and I'm 29. Currently living in Sydney Australia, but I'm a New Zealander.

BM: Describe your artwork to us. Where do you get ideas from? Do you have any inspirations?
SL: I mainly work in watercolor and ink on paper, and get into a bit of cross pollination using the painted image with photography and video. I like to document and dramatize scenarios of real life...and scenarios that have nothing to do with reality but are, rather, scenes I could only hope to witness, such as a cat playing a vintage computer game or a pastel dinosaur dressed as a ghost. My work is supposed to be funny, and references sex often- 'humorous' sex rather than 'this is serious' sex. ... the animals I paint have nothing to do with sex, by the way. everybody knows that sex and animals don't mix. Like, you have to kick the cat out of the room before a make-out session goes any further, out of respect for animal rights and animal prude-ishness. The single biggest influence on my work is probably music. I had some confused years when I couldnt reconcile my passion- music, and my talent- art. Ladyhawke totally helped me out of that jam, and now I make art for music. Perfect!I have gotten a number of ideas by observing my friends and their posturing and antics, and from looking at the ways photography records such moments. Im inspired by portrait photography and old movie posters, and artists who aren't afraid to use a little humour and a little darkness, especially film makers John Waters, Bruce La Bruce and Tim Burton. At the moment, outside of my work with Ladyhawke, I'm looking at people who define themselves by a personal ideal of beauty... rather than say, a mass media ideal.

BM: How did you learn to have such good technique in painting/drawing?
SL: I'm not too sure what happened- in highschool I had good enough ideas but only fairly good skills, then after highschool I took a break from drawing and painting for about four years. When I came back to it, at the very first attempt, my technical skills had really improved. Maybe I was drawing in my sleep or something, I cant explain it. It was very weird. There are a few contributing factors though; my mother is an artist and would occasionally take me to her watercolour lessons when i was very young, and I have learned a lot from her over the years, especially about colour. I call mum with mundane questions like "how do I re-stretch my paper after the painting is finished", or to discuss the fascinating properties of the color 'rose madder genuine'. I origianally majored in printmaking at art school, and that tought me a lot about layering, which has really informed my painting practice.

BM: What does the future hold for Sarah Larnach?
SL: I would like to make more music videos and maybe a film; not because I have delusions of grandeur, but more because i have lots and lots of ideas. loads, and when i follow them along, they surprise me. And having them come to fruition is totally delightful. who doesn't want work to be delightful?!I love that my work is on record covers because it means hundreds of thousands of people have looked at my painting, even if they don't give a damn. When you compare that to the limited number of people you share with in an exhibition setting... well, its not that the creative value changes, but shit; if I didn't care about sharing my work I'd just finish it and file it away in my studio without showing anyone, you know? Anyway, I guess its egotistical, but I hope that more of my paintings get picked up for other such highly exposed uses so that I might feel like a farmer looking over the bountiful crops she grew from seed. If I made something that went into mass-production, I'd be thrilled.I also have a documentary project which is a collaboration with a filmer and a composer. I am painting portraits in the way a photographer records the subjects of a story.And I'm close to completion of a lighthearted solo series; I still need to approach galleries to exhibit it. Its suggestive and definatly a bit rude. It is a love letter to John Waters, in a way... a dedication from a fan. When Its done, I will send a package of the work to John Waters and propose he donate his dude-juice for the benefit of my neglected baby making equipment.

BM: What are three things that you can't live without?

SL: Family/friends, The Simpsons and heavy matching (shoes must colour match an item of clothing or accessory on top half, jeans color must match detail on tee shirt or jacket)

BM: Any advice for struggling young artists out there?

SL: You dont need to do things 'by-the-book'. Invent your own reasons to create. Invent projects. Invent your own path and short-cuts along it. Develop a creative partnership with someone, or lots of people, even if you are in different fields of creativity; because if you're prepared to bring your parners/friends along for the ride, hopefully they'll be doing the same for you.

BM: The music video you did for Ladyhawke is super impressive, how did you start working with her?
SL: Aww, thanks!We became inseparable best friends when we met, about 5 years ago... that was the reason why I came close to failing my last year of art school (because I didnt want to go to any classes). I painted one picture of her that year, but our first collaborative effort was a pretty hilarous club night which featured our ground breaking rock-bingo; the prize and catch phrase was "Mug, Rug or Jug?!"... winners choice of a mug (with a kitten on it), a rug (those nasty fleece ones with wild animals pictured), or a jug of beer. Oh, we had bands too, and we DJ'd. And occasionally you could win a meat tray... its a New Zealand custom..In retrospect, it was all a bit camp. Anyway, we were living in Sydney when Ladyhawke was really coming together, but I was broke, and sad because I hadnt been very creative in a long time. So Pip (Ladyhawke) bought me a little table and chair, and some materials and basically sat me down and said "PAINT!". I experemented with some Ladyhawke logos, and listened to Pips suggestions for how I should pick my portraits, which has really shaped my style. She used to make these really great digital collages of all the things that inspired Ladyhawke, and I'd take colour-scheme and subject references from those. Ours is a was a very natural collaboration, and I have no hesitation to say that Pip has been my muse.

BM: Where was your first kiss?

SL: Up a tree.

BM: Do you kiss and tell?

SL: No. Telling spoils the secret.

BAISER MAGAZINE: Hi Ben, tell us abit about yourself, maybe a fun fact. Where are you from?
BENJAMIN PHILLIPS: I'm Benjamin Phillips, 23 years old, live and work in Brighton. I'm originally from Liphook in Hampshire (its a crummy little village and I wouldn't recommend going there, a lot of bored kids who have nothing better to do than get in fights, as I had a stupid haircut I was an obvious target 'fuzzy wanker').fun fact- I can get my legs behind my head, it's not sexy when boys do it.

BM: How old were you when you started to draw? Were there any real inspirations that sparked the creativity to become the artist you are today?
BP: I can't remember starting to draw, but I can't remember not drawing. I remember people being impressed by my scribbles from an early age, I was the only kid that could draw thumbs in green class.

BM: How did working with Peggy Sue (the album cover is ace by the way) come about?
BP: Thank you. I met katy at a print fair in Brighton, she bought an etching of mine, then got back in touch about 6 months later when I had an image in Source magazine. I love doing stuff for Peggy Sue as their musics great and they're really open to let me produce what I want to.

BM: What are the plans for your future? Are you thinking of starting an art book piece or anything like that?
BP: I've just finished a book of short writings and illustrations, it's called 'setbacks and mishaps' I want to try and get it published, but I don't know who it's audience would be.... too adult for children but too remedial for adults, unlucky.

BM: How did your artwork start to get noticed? Do you have any advice on other artists out there who would like to get recognized?
BP: I have a lot to thank peggy sue for and that just came about through selling at print fares. Get out as much as you can, and work like hell when you're indoors. Take every opportunity even if it seems like a waste of time at face value- but don't get ripped off! Competitions and collaborations are goodens.

BM: What do you like to do besides picking up a pencil...
BP: making music- myspace.com/almamahler We're playing Sellindge festival in kent in a couple of weeks, stop by if you're in the countryside. Hanging out with my friends, beers on the beach, movies are pretty cool too.

BM: Your drawing are sometimes strange... how do you come up with these odd characters?
BP: I don't know really it's all a bit subconscious, I work it out as the drawing develops. I've got a fair few hang-ups and have no problem with embracing feeling agitated at times.

BM: Where was your first kiss?
BP: my old friend Robin's garden.

BM: Do you kiss and tell?
BP: Only if it's not too embarrassing and I'm selective with my audience.

pigeon death
THE DEATH OF A BIRD

Okay all you folks out there are all too aware of that swine flu that’s been hovering about so slyly. Which is fair enough, but the other day when I was in town with a dear friend of mine, i spotted a pigeon. the most beautiful thing I believe, but my friend didn’t think so.
I asked why, and his reply " they are city rats that’s why" it was as simple as that.
This really did hurt me, looking over at the pigeon that looked so pure and genuine, not like a flesh eating zombie or anything like that, was scraping about Sainsbury’s car park for any food that was going.

And than i remembered the dead pigeon i found when i was walking home with friends. it was probably some inconsiderate git tearing the streets that was the death of this bird. which brought me to question the hate that comes with pigeons, I mean really its not every day you come across a pigeon whose intentions are to kill you are they really..
Okay i can totally sympathise with you if you have had some past experience with a pigeon whose intentions where exactly that. and i am fully aware that the majority of these birds carry deadly diseases but I’m not asking you to go and drink its piss or eat its shit.
But a little bit of respect for these birds and the worlds a better place. well not entirely, but learn to love a pigeon and they might just stop shitting on you.

BAISER MAGAZINE: Tell us a bit about yourself. How old are you, where are you from?
BILLIE JD: I'm normally inclined to add a few years to my real age for fear of people
a) having negative preconceptions about my writingb) throwing me out of their venuec) realising they have commited statatory rape I left school last year so go figure. I'm also a straight-edge virgin from Islington, although I recently moved to Hackney.

BM: How did you get started in interviewing bands and writing articles for magazines like Platform and Vice?
BJD:The guy who owns Platform used to run All Age Concerts and I worked with him on that. I used to work in the Vice office, but for another company, then I was asked to write an article about accidently crippling my boss and have contributed since.

BM: Who has your favourite band been to interview, so far?
BJD: Beardyman. My interviews don't normally tend to be the most comfortable or enjoyable experiences, for the artists involved anyway, but he was just a really funny guy, aside from his music. Also Andy Butler - the guy behind Hercules and Love Affair.

BM: Haha, Why do interviews with bands usually feel awkward? Do you act bizzare or something?
BJD: Its not so much my acting bizarre (which I don't think I do), I think its just touching on areas other journalists haven't. A couple of people have walked out of interviews I've done with them...

BM: Any plans for the future?
BJD: To write more. To sleep more. We also shot the first episode of a new VBS show the other day which will be plugged through the Viceland blog, so if all goes to PLAN, that will be a success...Further along, my only plan in life is to travel.

BM: What is style to you?
BJD: I don't know, attitude probably. Its a tricky subject, I just know I'm really tired of girls using polka dot dresses and victory curls to disguise how fat and ugly they are, calling it 'rockabilly!!!!!!!' and thinking they're hella authentic. Its the same for a lot of people who dress according to a certain era - vintage clothing has become a trend in itself, regardless of its quality. I think a lot of girls are under the impression that wearing a soiled bin bag is edgy so long as it came from a charity shop in Dalston. Combining pieces you'd think would be really uncomplimentary towards one another then pulling it off is what I define as stylish.

BM: What bands are you listening to at the moment. Any you recommend?
BJD: I saw a cool band the other night called The Mickey Gang. They're these really young guys from Brazil who have a weird accent I can't quite describe, but its good.

BM: Any advice for teens wanting to get into the magazine industry?
BJD: Its never been easier to start your own 'zine' so if you're having trouble getting published do that. Also take a no holds barred approach in your writing, it should be ruthless and honest. I think that's a quote from Almost Famous.. uh

BM: Where do you hang out in London? Any favourite place, shops, clubs?

BJD: Some of my favourite places in Islington are The Candid Café, Get Stuffed and Camden Passage. The Sunset Strip is a strip club in Soho where the girls are introduced by a guy who sounds like he runs a fairground ride. They then proceed to dance to the least sexy soundtrack imaginable - that's also a good place. 12 Bar on Denmark Street and the Barbican Conservatory.

BM: What are three things you can't live without?

BJD: If I say air and cigarettes is that a contradiction in terms? Also Kate Bush.

BM: Kate Bush is fucking amazing. What's your favourite song to sing along to by her?
BJD: Where Are The Lionhearts from The Pheonix Demos.

BM: What colour is your lipstick?
BJD: I found it at a family friend's house, its a bit of a mystery lipstick.Hepititis Rouge.

BM: Do you kiss and tell?

BJD: Totally.

BAISER MAGAZINE: Who are The Spills? Where are you from?
THE SPILLS: We're a band from Wakefield.

BM: How and when did you guys start?
TS: We we're all friends at school then I (Rob) started to stockpile some songs and then showed them to Sam. Then Joe and Chad we're the obvious two members to form the band with.

BM: What can an audience expect from a Spills gig?
TS: Reasonably noisy, maybe some dancing?

BM: What bands influence you the most?
TS: I personally really love Pixies and Envelopes and I think there's a definite Radiohead middle ground that we all share. I saw Jeff Lewis at Hyde Park Picture house in Leeds the other night. It was amazing. We're into loads of different stuff though. Lots of our friends bands from Wakefield or nearby. Bands with an agenda and a manifesto. Good bands.

BM: What do you guys like to do besides playing music?
TS: I record a lot of bands in my home studio. Played squash for the first time the other week as well. I reckon I could get quite into that. I can't really speak for the others but just the usual, watching films and listening to music. Sam quite likes watching football. etc.

BM: Where/What was your best gig ever?
TS: My favorite was probably our EP launch last summer in Wakefield. Us and our friends the Piskie Sits released a split EP and played the launch together. It was really busy and had lots of our friends there and was really fun.

BM: The Cribs are also from Wakefield. Do you hope to become as famous as they are?
TS: Hey yeah maybe we could top them by getting Morrissey as a 5th member, although I can't help but think it might disturb the status-quo of our inter-band relationship. I am a vegetarian though so that's a talking point.

BM: What are your plans for the future?
TS: Been writing a lot of new songs and just been recording in Bridlington with James Kenosha. That'll be getting released some time in the summer probably. I think it's gonna be a download single.

BM: Where was your first kiss?
TS: Oh there's been so many I find it hard to keep track of them. We're trying really hard to stop kissing each other as much at the moment. What else is there to do though after you've just written a smash hit?

BM: Do The Spills kiss and tell?
TS: Nah, we try and keep it to ourselves.

BAISER MAGAZINE: Who are Thee Vicars? Where are you guys from?
THEE VICARS: Thee Vicars are four young lads ages between 17-19 from a small town in suffolk called Bury St Edmunds

BM: How and when did the band start?
TV: The band started in April 2007. We were terribly drunk at the time at a gig in our town. We were appauled at the bands, not just that night, but every gig in the town. We'd already played together in other bands (though not playing outside of sleepy suffolk) and so we rambled on about starting a band thats actually exciting and fun. Surprisingly we actually remembered the conversation and followed up on it the next day! From then we discovered that not all live bands now are bad, just most of them.

BM: Your songs are great to party and dance to (I would know from personal experience). Do you guys like to party alot?
TV: Yeah!

BM: What makes the perfect party?
TV: beer and chicks

BM: Are there any bands that influence your sound?
TV: Of course, mostly 60's bands such as The Chocolate Watchband, The Kinks, The Stones, The Standells, The Remains, The Sevens. And obviously there's Billy Childish who has an amazing sound.

BM: What are your plans for the future?
TV: Gig as much as possible, put out as many records out as possible, and hopefully live off doing this. I'm pretty sure it's the only thing any of us are capable of putting up with.

BM: What can an audience at a gig expect from Thee Vicars?
TV: Loud, LOUD raw sounds, dancing, rambling...all kinds of mischief.

BM: Are there any crazy stories or gigs that you guys would like to share?
TV: our guitarist threw up over himself outside patronaat in haarlem recently after too much beer mixed with magic mushrooms, our manager drew a swastika on his bell end in cortina bob in berlin and flashed it around....few more

BM: So you have an upcoming tour with the Black Lips, that's amazing. How did that happen, are you guys excited?
TV: king khan told them about us and they came to see us play at bloomsbury bowling lanes in london before they flew home, jared actually begged us to play some gigs with them, we said yes. hell yeah we're excited!!

BM: One word that describes Thee Vicars?
TV: busy

BM: Are there any quotes/sayings you live by?
TV: Nope, just live life, make music, and have fun doing it.

BM: What is your favourite thing about the opposite sex?
TV: Their ability to get Thee Vicars movin'!

BM: Do Thee Vicars kiss and tell?
TV: Sometimes...and sometimes not. Depends if it's worth a tell.

DEAD KIDS: we got together the way atoms get together. exactly the same except drunker.we realised that the world only understands one language. the language of blood. we speak the language of blood.

BM: What can we expect from a Dead Kid's gig?
DK: a horrific smile on your face. you will definately get laid and thats a beautiful thing

BM: Do the Dead Kids like to party? What makes the perfect party for you guys?
DK: we like to party as much as anyone else. sometimes the party can go on too long and you need to stop. the perfect party for me, and i can only talk for me, will have lots of friendly people wanting to share everything with each other.

BM: Where is your favourite place in London?
DK: i have no favourite place but i do have favourite moods

BM: What is your favourite thing about the opposite sex?
DK: i like the way they smell and think

TESS PARKS interview for BAISER MAGAZINE (FEATURE #2)

BAISER MAGAZINE: Tell us a bit about yourself.
TESS PARKS: born and raised in toronto. about a year ago, at seventeen, (i'm eighteen now as you may have gathered) i moved to london to pursue music and photography. toronto was the best place to grow up. it's a big city in it's own right but i definitely felt that i could go bigger and london seemed like the most suitable upgrade. london is actually the biggest drag. i had been to london a handful of times before but not properly lived here. i had built london up so much in my head but it's everything and nothing i expected it to be. there's no place like home.

BM: How old were you when you started singing/writing songs?
TP: it all comes down to august 2002. it was the summer my parents were separated. my sister and i were splitting our time between our childhood home and our dad's new house that i hated at the time. and i had recently started listening to oasis and asked my dad to get tickets for their show. so, we went. $10 a ticket, can you fucking imagine that now? and all i remember really is noel gallagher walking out on stage with the acoustic and playing wonderwall, the sun was finally setting and that smell and feel of the last days of summer... the next day i asked my parents for a guitar. lyrics and music came together soon after. it took me a long long time to be sure of my voice, though.

BM: What kind of bands/musicians are you into right now?
TP: music just keeps getting better. there's never been a musical draught in my opinion. i really BELIEVE in music. music is the only thing that lasts forever, if you think about it. if someone records a song and shares it, it can last forever. who can name important dead people besides movie stars, musicians and artists? i can't even tell you the name of my great grandparents.
obviously, i have a soft spot for oasis. elliott smith, bob dylan, cat power and radiohead are major major influences. right now i really like vetiver, new horrors is so sexy, devendra banhart... oh my god, and the song "today" by jefferson airplane is the best new old song in my life right now. it's stunning. i could actually go on forever.

BM: What are your plans for the future?
TP: ohhhh i have no fucking clue. i want to move around and travel. i want to write and record an album i'm really proud of. i've got about 100 songs that i don't know what to do with. i want to meet more people that inspire me. i want to learn more instruments and different languages. i want to have a gallery show of my photography at some point. but i don't want to burn out. i know myself too well to know if i set too many standards for myself i'll actually go a little bit crazy.

BM: Are there any quotes/sayings you live by?
TP: row row row your boat gently down the stream merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dream

TP: girl

TP: absolutely everything.

SANNA BERGER interview for BAISER MAGAZINE (FEATURE #1):

BAISER MAGAZINE: What do you do and what inspires you?
SANNA BERGER: i dabble in a cocktail of mischeif and things some may say resemble art. really i just do whatever i feel like at any given moment.

i have a hard time pinpointing inspiration. my friends and the people i choose to surround myself with can inspire me to do things but still that's not it.people with little inhibition but great carachter and self awareness, films, old books on anatomy, architectural compostion. (am i just making this up to make it sound good?) i really haven't got a clue what inspires me. i had a discussion once with a girl who had no distance to self whatsoever it would have been funny if she hadn't been so damn tragic, she said she inspired herself, deadly serious, 'she just came up with theses amazing ideas and followed through'. that last part was a lie cause she produced a shitty magazine that was truely appalling but ill go with her answer. i inspire myself, im a twat but gosh dont i know it.

BM: What made you want to start The Vagabond Set?
SB: since i normally move a few times a year it felt suitable to document my endeavours and the name felt like a good idea at the time. i started it when moving to tokyo. i had different priorities (getting drunk and barred from various places) at that time and my life has changed alot since.

BM: The Vagabond Set contains alot of documentation of your daily life. Do you carry a camera around everywhere you go?
SB: yes. a little shitty compact cam with 6.0 mp that my ex gave me many years ago for my birthday. id take that over an slr any day. people thinking that the result will be fantastic according to what camera they use are pretty stupid. i do own a fair amount of cameras. and as i moved yesterday i realised that i have more cameras than items of clothing (have sold all my clothes in an urge not to own any, coming back to my love for stricly uniform based outfits. i would be happy if all i ever wore was a short black dress, and army jacket, a beret and an eyepatch. at some point a gun in that equation would be great but id just shoot people wearing uggs at site and go to jail. when the goverment collapses and anarchy strike i will be getting a gun.) i have two lomos, some instamatics, and some really old and hard to work cameras that i love and my polaroid camera is always an anti-depressant. then i mostly shoot with disposables. i have around 40 or so that i havent developed yet.

BM: Where are you from? Where is your favourite place to be?
SB: im from sweden (isn't everyone these days?) but today i moved from london to berlin.my favoruite place varies from day to day, it can be a dark room or the park. but i assume you mean city/country where the same theory applies. paris will always be the city where i intend to grow old and diebut before that i would hope to cover the majority of the world (except for australia) my favourite places so far is paris, tokyo and berlin. london is a great city, but not much substance there. berlin in the summer is pure euphoria and clichéd or not, every time i goto paris i experience immense happiness. there are so many places i want to go still, russia fx.

BM: Paris IS beautiful. Where do you usually hang out around there?
SB: nowhere where the beautiful people hang out. i can find nice things in collette as any other but i much prefer small bars and restaurants with a non english menu. ill go into any bar where the clientel are mainly bearded old men wearing the same clothes they probarbly did 30 years ago. there is an organic vegetarian restaurant by abbesses that i love. its one room, one person doing everything. my ex lover and i used to sit outside all night and eat tarts and drink copious amounts of red wine until we tumbled down the cobbled street. i once met a man in there who lived opposite, i got to visit his flat (nothing sinister) which was pretty much my dream flat. he lived there for free cause the building was about to come down at any moment, the rooms were completely unproportioned and you actually had to hold onto the reiling as you climbed the staircase cause the building was so crooked. the flat in 'the dreamers' is my fantasy flat, which by chance is pretty much the flat i had in london. a 120 year old 4 bedroom flat with gold painted wooden floors, high ceilings and no modern appliances whatsoever.

BM: What is your day job?
SB: excusez-moi? i dont believe in day jobs. i have'nt had one for as long as i can remember.

BM: What kind of films and music are you interested in?
SB: the velvet underground, bob dylan, joy division, blonde redhead and talking heads are pretty much the only bands on my itunes. i have slim to no clue about anything new on the music scene. im one of those (bitter old farts?) who is incredibly uninterested in any new young (hip) up and coming artist.i still havent decided wether thats a good thing or not. but i do like bands like arab strap, the books (who are genius), my bloody valentine, black flag, cat power, nick drake, patti smith, serge gainsbourg and the streets. i could bore you with more, but i'll leave it there.
im cuckoo for french nouvelle vague films, jean-luc godard being without a doubt my fav nouvelle vague director ("all you need to make a film, is a gun and a girl"). i love almost everything woody allen have done (im turning out to sound pretty damn predictable), wes anderson makes me stupidly happy, justin theroux is getting crazy good and steven sebring made the most inspirational film i may have ever seen about patti smith. i tend to watch films that are gritty and grey rather than sweet and perky but clueless is none the less a classic masterpiece.

BM: What is style to you?
SB: jane birkin, patti smith, ian curtis, patti hearst and anything srictly uniformed - skinheads / black panthers / mods / the royal tenenbaums / hitlerjugend.

BM: What are three things you can't live without?
SB: id wish it was 3 books. i dont have anything i would kill myself over loosing but i wouldn't want to be without my compact cam, my laptop or my friend sandy. im such a tech child. but im allowing myself to be as long as im in my twenties. the moment i turn 30 i am leaving internet and technology behind for cocktail hour and sarcastic art appreciation societies. technically sandy isn't a thing but she's small enough for me to pack in my hand luggage so i think she qualifies.

BM: What is your philosophy?
SB: no excuses.

BM: What colour is your lipstick?
SB: if any pale nude with a sliver of pink.

BM: Do you kiss and tell?
SB: never x
